The Top Gun Singles division as always featured some of the best players in the world. 13 of the 14 players considered a semi-pro or a pro by the ACO according to the current ranking system in place by the ACO. The one player that did not have a SCR is considered one of the top players in the local area based on his past performances in tournaments this year. A little overview of how the Top Gun format works - players are placed in a pool based on their overall SCR score. Players will then go against 4 different opponents in their pool. Players are then seeded by their record in the pool. If players have the same overall record then the SCR score is used to seed the player appropriately in the "Bracket Challenge". In the Bracket Challenge - it is single elimination and match play throughout the bracket. Below is the following seeding order once the pool play was over;
#1 seed: Stuart Baird, Charlestown, IN
#2 seed: Dale Smith, Campbellsville, KY
#3 seed: Noel True, Monterey, KY
#4 seed: Sherri Eggleton, Indianapolis, IN
#5 seed: Danny Seals, Marysville, IN
#6 seed: Charles True, Monterey, KY
#7 seed: Kevin Warner, Indianapolis, IN
#8 seed: Troy Simon, Cincinnati, OH
#9 seed: Brent Ellis, Indianapolis, IN
#10seed: Brandon Duckett, Lebanon Jct., KY
#11 seed: Phil Harmon, West Liberty, KY
#12 seed: Keith Blair, Louisville, KY
#13 seed: Sherman Smith, Indianapolis, IN
#14 seed: MIke Payne, Brandenburg, KY
In the "Bracket Challenge" it was the #3 seed, Noel True who took control of the tournament and never looked back. In the final 8 Noel defeated the #6 seed Charles True. In the final 4 he defeated the #7 seed Kevin Warner. The #5 seed, Danny Seals came on strong in the bracket challenge defeating the #12 seed Keith Blair, #13 seed Sherman Smith, and the very tough #9 seed Brent Ellis. Brent Ellis upset the overall #1 seed Stuart Baird to get to the final 4. The championship came down to the #5 and #3 seeds. Danny Seals vs. Noel True. Noel dug in early and never let go in this one and defeated Danny in two straight games. **This division was very competitive with a lot matches that could have gone either way.**
Keith Blair (Louisville, KY) and Stuart Baird (Charlestown, IN) took care of business in the competitive doubles division at the Maize Kraze. Keith and Stuart have become a good team and seem to really feed off each other in doubles competition. Keith and Stuart defeated the always tough rising stars in cornhole doubles action, Brandon Duckett and Blake Myers (Lebanon Junction, KY). Brandon and Blake is always a tough out and will be a force in the future. Coming in third place was Danny Seals (Marysville, IN) and Phil Harmon (West Liberty, KY). Danny and Phil defeated Sherri Eggleton and Kevin Warner (Indianapolis, IN.). Overall, participation was down this year, but there was some great cornhole action in this doubles division. Thanks to all the teams that did participate in this event!
Terry Mathis (Indiana) owned the social singles on this day. Terry defeated Bill Tindle (Louisville, KY) in the championship between two solid players that you will be hearing from in the future in the compeitive divisions. Coming in third was Ricky Belcher (Louisville, KY) and coming in fourth was Donnie Stinnett (Louisville, KY). All of these players show a lot of promise in the future. We look forward to watching them make the move up into the top divisions. There closer than they may think!
